Where did you go to school, and what made you decide to pursue marketing?
I first went to St. Cloud Technical College for Architectural Construction Technology, and unfortunately graduated in 2006, which was just at the height of the housing bust. So after a few years of bouncing around in the construction industry, my husband and I decided to move to Bemidji and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to go back to school for something a little more broad. I’ve always liked marketing, so it was a perfect fit to go for Marketing Communications at Bemidji State University. I was pretty lucky to hear about this opportunity at Karvakko, which let me use both of my degrees. And even better that I started my position here a few months before graduation.
How long have you been with the firm and what is your favorite thing about working at Karvakko?
I’ve been with the firm for nearly 6 years, and have a lot of favorite things. But probably my most favorite is how genuine everyone is. We really are a team, and treat each other like family. It’s not just something we say. Everyone lives it, and that could not be more true.
What does your job mainly consist of, and what part do you enjoy the most?
I’m more of a behind-the-scenes kind of person, and usually am the one asking these questions, which I think I like much better than being the one in the spotlight! But my position consists of supporting the team to find projects, and creating and coordinating firm promotion through social media, website updates, advertisements, promotional items, etc. I like the variety, and the chance to contribute to our firm’s identity. Even though I’m not designing our projects, I’m just as proud to see our impact on our community, and tell people about what we’ve done around the area.
How has marketing in general changed since you started at Karvakko?
Certainly social media and online marketing has exploded, even in the 6 short years that I’ve been here. And just in general how people gather information—it’s much more relationship and content based.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be and why?
Time travel. I’d love to see different time periods and how they compare to today.
